Head of the Rock

Rockford, IL  – On Sunday, October 11, the University of Michigan Men's Rowing Team opened their fall racing season at the Head of the Rock in Rockford, Illinois. The team entered 18 crews in ten events, and won 13 medals.

Racing opened with small boats, some of which were used as a final selection tool for the team's Championship 8 entry at next week's Head of the Charles. Michigan's A - Entry won the Open Pair in 17:27.574, with Michigan's other entry finishing second in the event. In the Collegiate Pair, UM's top entry finished in 17:18.332, over 15 seconds ahead of the second Michigan pair, which won the silver medal.

The varsity squad also raced in seven fours, including a Lightweight 4 that won in 17:46.120. The crew featured two of the members of the 2015 Lightweight 4 that won the ACRA National Championship.

In the Open 4 event, the squad's A - Entry won in 17:01.848, well ahead of Michigan's other two entries, which finished fourth and sixth. In the Collegiate 4, UM used four oarsmen from the team's top 8 to win the event in 16:15.394. Michigan's other two entries in the event placed seventh and eleventh.

Ten freshmen also raced at the regatta, nine of whom were part of a victorious Novice 8. The frosh then broke into two fours, winning the Collegiate Novice 4 and placing second in the Open Novice 4.

The varsity squad closed out the day with racing in four 8s. In the Open 8, the Wolverines took the gold and bronze medals, while the team two entries in the Collegiate 8 placed first and seventh. The winning crew in the latter event won by nearly 50 seconds over second - place Purdue.

The team will return to Ann Arbor before sending three crews to the Head of the Charles in Boston, Massachusetts on Saturday and Sunday.
