24th Annual Anaerobic Tournament

Ann Arbor, MI  – On Wednesday, February 17, the varsity squad participated in the 24th annual Anaerobic Tournament, while the Freshmen held their own miniature version in the morning.

The tournament is a bracket - style competition consisting of six 500 - meter pieces. Competitors are initially broken into four groups of eight, from which the top four advance into quarterfinals. In the four - person quarterfinal, the top two advance to semifinals. From the eight semifinalists, only four advance to the Grand Final (two from each heat). Seniors Mitch Tyson and Ben Rebertus advanced by beating classmates Alika Ziker and James Garay, while seniors Ian McGraw and Alex Brown punched their tickets to the final by defeating senior William Burstein and junior Garrett Klumpar.

Once in the Grand Final, the remaining four must complete the last three pieces, with the winner having the fastest average time. Tyson, a first - time finalist, was this year's winner, averaging 1:24.2 on his final three pieces. McGraw finished second, followed by 2015 finalists Brown and Rebertus.

All other oarsmen advanced to various rounds of petite and 3rd - level semi - finals and finals to determine their ultimate rank, with junior Phil Faris winning the Petite Final. The team will continue training indoors until they leave for spring break training in Gainesville, Georgia on February 26.
