– The 2017 Fall racing season was kicked off with a trip to the Head of the Rock, just a short
drive away in Illinois. Facing Purdue, Illinois, and other teams from across the Midwest, the team used
this race as an opportunity to re-acquaint themselves with competition and introduce members of the
novice team to collegiate competition.
Row-out conditions Saturday were less than ideal, with boats struggling against rain, chop, and
Rockford’s famous driving headwind. Fortunately, conditions for racing on Sunday were much improved,
with a calm sunny morning transitioning to mild chop and winds for the final races.
The team put this opportunity to good use, and showed up ready to perform. The first Varsity 8+ took gold
by 21 seconds over second place Purdue. Similarly, the Quad and first Varsity 4+ won gold in their
respective events. The freshmen showed their mettle by seizing gold in the Novice 8+, as well as gold
and bronze in the Novice 4+ event.
The team now prepares for a split weekend on Oct 21-22. Two varsity fours and an eight will be traveling
to Boston for the Head of the Charles, while the rest of the squad prepares for our annual head-to- head
against Michigan State in East Lansing.
