Ithaca Invitational

March 25, 2016

Ithaca, NY  – On Friday, March 25, 2016, the University of Michigan Men's Rowing Team travelled to Ithaca, New York to race in the Ithaca Invitational. The squad faced competition from hosts Ithaca College and Cornell University, as well as from Bucknell University and Hobart College. Racing was held on the two - lane Cayuga Inlet, limiting each matchup to a dual - style race. Morning racing featured every Michigan 8 facing off against a Cornell 8, with afternoon matchups decided by the times from the morning.

Morning racing opened with the 20th - ranked Michigan Varsity 8 facing Big Red's 8th - ranked crew, finishing in 6:11.4 to Cornell's 5:59.9. This set the Wolverines up for an afternoon matchup with unranked rival Hobart College, who they defeated by 6.7 seconds.

The Second Varsity 8 fell to their Cornell counterparts by 11.5 seconds before besting Hobart's Second Varsity 8 by over 12 seconds in the afternoon.

The Third Varsity 8 lost to their Cornell equivalent in the morning before facing the Cornell Lightweight Third Varsity crew in the afternoon. In that contest, the Wolverines had a closer result, but lost by 7.1 seconds.

One of the bigger wins of the day came from the Fourth Varsity 8, who defeated Cornell's Fifth Varsity 8 by 4.3 seconds in the afternoon after falling to Cornell's Fourth Varsity 8 in the morning. The crew's afternoon race was the only contest of the day in which a Michigan boat beat a Cornell boat.

Varsity racing concluded with the Varsity 4, which fell to Ithaca in the morning before posting one of the largest margins of victory of the day in the afternoon in a 40.7 second blowout. The crew succeeded despite significant adversity, in which their shell was badly damaged by a log before their first race, forcing them to use borrowed equipment for both of their duals.

The Freshman squad had their inaugural spring race, highlighted by a dominant performance from the Freshman 8. In the morning, the crew defeated Bucknell's Second Varsity 8 by 14 seconds. In the afternoon, the frosh had an even more dominant victory over Bucknell's novices, crushing them by over 20 seconds.

The Second Freshman 8 fell to the Cornell Lightweight squad's Fifth Varsity 8 in the morning before a much closer race against the Lightweights' Sixth Varsity 8 in the afternoon, where they were also defeated.

The same Cornell Lightweight Sixth Varsity 8 that raced the Second Freshman 8 in the afternoon squared off against Michigan's Third Freshman 8 in the morning, in which the latter was defeated after posting a time of 7:11.0. In the afternoon, however, the frosh crew managed to defeat Ithaca by open water.

The team will return to Ann Arbor, where they will continue training before select members of the Varsity and Freshman squads leave for the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, California on Thursday, March 31.
