2011-2012 Freshman Squad

9/24/2011 — The University of Michigan Men’s Rowing Team has finalized the 2011-2012 team roster with the addition of 50 athletes to the freshman squad.  The “frosh” come from 11 states and are principally walk-on athletes with no previous rowing experience. The group was officially named to the team after a two-week trial period that ended with a formal tryout on September 21. Over 100 potential freshman rowers participated in the trial period.

“I believe that this group of freshman will be able to make a strong contribution to the team and will continue the tradition of strong classes moving up to the varsity squad,” Freshman Men’s Coach Russell Giacobbe said.

The first full team race will be this weekend in East Lansing, Michigan at the Head of the Grand. Michigan will field six eights boats in the freshman eights event, and look to have a solid showing following two gold medal performances by the experienced freshmen on the team in the freshman eight and freshman four events at the Head of the Rock regatta in Rockford, Illinois, last weekend.

A complete roster of the team’s freshman and varsity squads can be found here on the Roster. Comprising nearly 100 rowers and coxswains, the Michigan men’s rowing team is one of the  largest such teams in the nation.
