10/13/2013 –On Sunday, October 13th, the University of Michigan men’s rowing team opened their fall racing season at the Head of the Rock regatta in Rockford, Illinois. Michigan entered nine events and won fifteen medals.
The team’s first race of the day was the men’s collegiate pair. Led by recent Pairs Matrix winners Nick Sferrazza and Matt Herbers, Michigan took the top three spots in the event.
Next up was the men’s collegiate novice eight event. In their first race as a Michigan Wolverine (and, for many of them, their first race ever), the novices captured second and fifth place. Later in the day, more freshmen raced in the men’s open novice eight event, capturing three medals. Closing out the day for the first – timers were two entries in the men’s collegiate novice four event, placing second and third.
Michigan dominated the fours events. In the men’s open four, the team finished first, fourth, and sixth. In the men’s collegiate four, Michigan’s two entries place second and fourth. Michigan’s only lightweight entry of the regatta, the men’s open lightweight four, finished third.
One of the last races of the day for Michigan was the men’s open eight. The team’s two crews entered placed first and fifth.
The premiere event of the day was the men’s collegiate eight, in which Michigan placed first and seventh. The winning crew had a dominant performance, winning by thirty seconds, and will be racing at the Head of the Charles on October 20th. The men’s collegiate four will also be racing in Boston on October 19th, while the rest of the team travels to East Lansing to race at the Head of the Grand.
