4/13/2013 – The Wolverines returned to Michigan after a dominant showing at the Occoquan Sprints to defend the men’s team points trophy at the 18th Annual Don Lubber’s Cup Regatta. Teams in attendance included University of Illinois, Michigan State University, and Grand Valley State University.
The regatta hosted in Spring Lake, Michigan, was cut short due to rough winds and freezing temperatures. Eights races proceeded with a strong tail wind and significant choppy waters. After morning racing, all fours events were cancelled due to inclement weather. The dangerous conditions prompted a hypothermia warning.
Morning racing kicked off with a dominant performance in the 2nd Varsity 8+ event, with Michigan’s 2nd Varsity 8+ and 3rd Varsity 8+ taking 1st and 3rd place respectively. The 2nd Varsity 8+ defended the Coach Chad Jedlic Cup with another strong race against Grand Valley.
The conditions worsened as the racing continued into the late morning. The Michigan 1st Novice 8+ and 2nd Novice 8+ took 2nd and 3rd places behind the oarsmen of Grand Valley State University.
The Michigan Varsity 8+ took 3rd place behind the defending Grand Valley crew and Michigan State.
