4/27/2013 – The 2014 Mid-America Collegiate Rowing Association (MACRA) Championship Regatta was held this year on Ford Lake in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Original plans were to race in Indianapolis at the Indianapolis Rowing Center; however, the river was not suitable for rowing conditions due to flooding in the area. The majority of all attendees were able to accommodate last-minute makeshift plans, with more than 20 teams in attendance at Ford Lake. A slight headwind picked up during the afternoon races but the sunny 65-degree weather held strong all day.
The morning kicked off with 8+’s and 4+’s heats, in which all the Michigan Varsity 8+, Novice 8+, Varsity 4+, and Lightweight 4+ qualified for the A Final event. The Novice 4+ qualified for the B Final event, losing by 4 seconds in their heat to 3rd place to Grand Valley.
One of the first events to finish off the sprint races was the Men’s Varisty 4+ Judson Ross Cup. The Michigan Varsity 4+ finished in third place to MSOE and Northwestern.
In Novice 8+ Grand Final – Paul Spring Cup, the Michigan Novice 8+ captured their first grand final win of the 2013 season. The crew finished with a time of 6:30.7, a clear victory over Grand Valley’s 2nd place time of 6:40.8. The crew had experienced some recent lineup switches due to athletes coming down with illnesses.
Perhaps one of the closest and most exciting races to cap of the day was the Men’s Varsity 8+ Grand Final – Ralph Lindamood Cup. Michigan, Michigan State, and Grand Valley raced neck-to-neck down the entire 2k course into the last 250 meters. The Wolverines mustered a powerful sprint to finish 3 seats up on Michigan State, whom they had lost to in the prior regatta. The Michigan crew finished with a final time of 6:11.1 to Michigan State’s 6:12.4 and Grand Valley’s 6:15.2.
The Wolverines will continue to train through final exams and the end of the academic year. Michigan races “The Double” in two weekends at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia and ECAC Regatta in Worcester, MA. This has been the second time in four years that “The Double” regatta weekend has been performed.
